Animal Facts

Hello there.

Here are some of our favourite animal facts. This list is evolving and expanding all the time, so come back again soon and if you have anything to add, please send us your own animal facts (see bottom of page for how to contribute).

  • A cow can go up stairs but not down them because of the way that their knees bend.
  • 1 cow makes 5 gallons of ice cream each day.
  • The average cow produces 30lbs of wee and 65lbs pounds of poo per day
  • A giraffe can clean its ears with its 50cm tongue!
  • Each step a giraffe takes is 15ft long.
  • A kangaroo cannot move its legs independently on land. It can, however, when it is in water.
  • Kangaroos are (technically) permanently pregnant
  • A kangaroo cannot move backwards
  • An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain!
  • Elephants are the only mammal which can't jump.
  • Mosquitos are attracted to the colour blue.
  • A honey bee can ingest its own weight in honey (Thanks to Amyas for this fact)
  • "Octopus" has 4 plurals: octopuses, octopi, octopus and octopodes.
  • Snails can sleep for up to three years. Ants don't sleep at all!
  • A donkey can see all four of its feet at the same time
  • All polar bears are left handed
  • Frogs can't swallow without blinking
  • Crocodiles can't stick their tongue out (Thanks to Rebecca for this fact, and the 3 above it as well)
  • Butterflies taste with their feet!
  • Poking a crocodile in the eye is not nice. But it is the best way to escape from its otherwise unwavering jaw grip. (Thanks to Shannon for these two facts)
